He charged me 30 buck for the inspection and told me if i sort it all out and bring it back with forks seals and a working neutral system witin 30 days I could get my cert for 28 bucks more.
Tomorrow i will tear down the front end and have it ready for parts on order and should be back at the shop by tues. Hopefully the email I sent to Suzuki will get me some sort of docs.
I do have some jobs to do in newmarket and they have a showroom there so maybe I get something from them.

in any case i will take it in with new fork seals and tell him the idiot light is all we have until I believe 87...

What a damn racket. How often must you guys have an inspection done? I know some states down here have safety inspection requirements, but thankfully Kentucky is not one of them. Leaky fork seals! Hell's fiire. Drain the oil out of them and take it back. Get the cert and fill 'em up with a combo of transmission fluid and tranny sealer,(seal sweller). Chances are it will work just fine. Change later at your convenience. Can you show the inspector a Clymers, Haynes or factory manual regarding your kickstand kill switch? Inspection! License to steal.

thay do that pass fail bs here with the CDL test. some guys go back up to 5 times at 100 bucks a test. a few places never passed a guy on the first round. I know one guy who got the state in to the mess. he was driving a rig on the farm at 15 years old. backing it up to docks and around grain bins. after his 2 fail on the test, he asked others taking the test how many times thay did it. the company that was doing the testing lost there cert.

its the same reason our state dropped the inspections on cars. way to many doing illegal stuff. you could get a car passed if you could find the right mech. give him a few bucks on Wednesday when he was broke your car would pass. some shops would fail a car, then charge for the fix even if there was no problem. you would then pass but it was going to cost you $50 bucks or more for the fix.

The kickstand switch is for an idiot light only. These bikes did not have the kill (if you will) feature newer bikes have which would prevent shifting into gear with the kickstand down.
Yes! My 82 GS1100G had an idiot light only linked to the kickstand, but my 98 Bandit would shut down if I pushed the kickstand down when it was running. Even older GS models (and some of the smaller displacement models) don't even have the idiot light.

$15 a year here but the inspectors just check for minimal things.

I would not take my bike back to that shop. The mech apparently doesn't know Jack Schitt about older bikes. Yes, you should fix the fork seals before trying to get another inspection done. Then ask some guys on the street, check out local websites and call around to "interview" the shops before going there. There has to be one local shop where there is a mech who knows older bikes.
If this bonehead can't get it through his brain that the GS series don't have a sidestand kill switch, he is useless to you and simply a drain to throw your money down.

my Canadian 83 550e has a side stand idiot light and clutch interlock no saftey switch for nuetral or side stand. no safety check needed in Alberta. unless it is a out of province bike or some insurance companies want a check.

switched was bypassed below the seat and my mech friend is going to cert it tomorrow with no need for seals. I took it out for 100k run and no oil on the forks or a drip anywhere, my carbs did over flow on one trip about 50 ml gas after shutdown, over about 5 min. anything to worry about? My guess would be new floats and inlet gasket.
