    Broken camshaft

Took off the top to see what may be causing backfire, and one section of the camshaft turns independently from the others. It's a 1983 GS750T. Any good sources for used or new camshaft? Any tips on replacing these. The bearing area looks a little rough. Are there replacement bearings? The spot almost looks as if it is part of the block. Once I replace it I'll have to adjust timing. What is best manual and where do I get it? Thanks in advance for the help. Really wanted to ride this summer, but it looks like I might not get there.

Check ebay for camshafts. You have a 16 valve engine so make sure you get the proper cam. The worn bearing surface is a major concern though. You will need a new head if the damage is extensive since there are no bearings. Post a couple of photos of the head scoring and we'll let you know if the head is salvageable.

Sounds like you ran without oil in the top end.
Recently did you switch cam cap bearings?
      Any work involving silicone?
      Remove clutch hub?

More than likely if you built up enough heat to seize and snap a camshaft I'd have to say your head is junk.

If you need a set of 80 GS1100 16 valve cams I have them.

Yes they drop in. With a little tuning it's an upgrade.\\/

You might want to check Ebay for a Factory Service Manual for your bike. A Clymer will work, but the FSM is much better. You may also be able to download one at www.repairmanualclub.com.
