Have been told able to use car rings (feed back please)

Hi I've been told I can re ring the gs1000 (by using car rings with a little re groving of the pistons

Has anyone done this or knows the pro's and con's of doing it.

I thought the wider ring will create more heat (con)

But give a better seal so less blow by meaning less oil changes and better proformance(pro)

Also cost of a set of rings ie all four pistons is about $100 nz as to $55 nz for bike rings per piston.

WOULD LIKE TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS AND IDEA'S](*,)

I don't think their would be enough piston to re machine the ring grouves,
Plus extra drag, extra heat . NOT A GOOD IDEA I don't know of any car with pistons as small as the MC Maybe special cogsworth pistons.
    Maybe check with http://www.jp.com.au/JPPistons.html

This idea has "WRONG" written all over it. The GS motors are fairly solid.
Don't mess with a good thing.

I know of a few bikes that have ran "car" ring sets, but they are very few and far between.

I do know of one bike (YAMAHA TX650) that had this done, and it ended up very costly 4 mths down the track as it needed new pistons and rings, as well as a good ole bore after one of the ring lands broke and scored the bore.

IMHO it just isnt worth it, just get the "bike" rings and have a known quantity, rather than risking machining the ring grooves on the pistons, and then finding that you have broken lands or rings shortly after youve given it a few good runs.

Total Seal can recut the grooves to accept a set of their Gapless rings. I have a set of NOS Cosworths I spent years trying to find rings for. Even Cosworth couldn't supply them These were one off pistons they used to provide to a few racers. I sent the pistons to them and they recut the two top grooves and supplied rings for about $180. You lose practically zero compression past the rings with their Gapless rings.

            Price is a killer

I think i'm going to have to have a go at regrooving my pistons.
The price of the rings per piston and the freight from the USA plus the gasket set will set me back close to $1000 that NZ $
Next time I'll buy a bike that doesn't need any work ( not that there is going to be a next time ) :-D

I just got a price on genuine pistons and rings for my GS750 here in Australia and it came to $700 for 1st oversize, included circlips etc.

Get onto springwood suzuki in Brisbane, they have a website, just email them and ask for the price including freight to NZ. Since its an island of the mainland (Aus) it shouldnt be too much more to send them there!

I did and they would be able to custom make some but the cost is high.
they said come back if i couldn't find any.

Why not just put a Wiseco kit in it.
