    Speedo swap.

I have a defunct speedometer. A) I'm going to test to make 100% sure it's just the speedo itself before buying one. To do so, my wife has an '81 GS550L. Will this fit on my '82 GS650GL? It looks the same so I'm guessing it will work for at least testing purposes. B) What years will work for my '82. Thanks

It should go right on. As long as the front wheel / tire combo are the same size, it will even read correctly. I think you can get away with a 1980-1985 speedo off of any of the 650's however, some will read up to 85 mph and others go to 140. You need to make sure that the top speed indicator reads the same as the one you are replacing.

The important thing is to match ratios. Wheel size and such doesn't matter as long as the ratios of your speedo gear and speedo match (assuming you have the stock speedo gear for your wheel). My GS speedo had the ratio printed on the inside case -- pull it apart and see if you can find that, then buy one to match. No problemo.

How do you get in to the guts of it? I have it down to the face and white backing. Can't see anything else.

As I recall it was the white inner enclosure which had the ratio listed. Also I think the info was in my Suzuki shop manual.
