Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi there folks just went on my first ride on the '83 GS750ES. Boy was it fun!

I want to change the oil and it says 20-50W on the oil filler cap. I use diesel 15-40wt in my other bike (2005 Kawi 1500 Classic cruiser) as the Kawi Vulcan forum highly recomends it over regular oil (better detergents).

Can I use the Rotella Shell 15-40wt diesel in my GS....?

Also what is the fuel capacity of the 750ES tank....?

I was only getting 37 m/gal on my way home there was some up hills and I was doing ~140km in spots but that seems a wee bit low.

What are other folks getting on the HWY for fuel milage?

Thanks in advance!

Rotella should be just fine, it's what a lot of folks are using around here, including me!

As for the mileage, is that US or imperial gallons? If I do over 110 clicks I get about 37 or 38 mpg US. If I do 80 or less I can get over 50mpg US

Your bike is an interesting one, I have an 83 and the cap says, 10W-40. Yeah, use 15W-40 if it makes you happy. I mainly run synthetic because it pulls the temperature down a little, and I get more time between changes. I get right around 18km/L in the city and just over 20km/L on the highway. I switch to reserve usually right at the red area for reserve on the gass guage(this is where I run out of gas too), I can then run in 15 Litres. I also run Regular 87 octane. I actually find I get less distance out of a tank if I run a Mid-grade or Premium. Enjoy your bike.

Also what is the fuel capacity of the 750ES tank....? Mine is a US model and holds 4 to 5 gallons (US). Have to look at the spec when I get home.

I was only getting 37 m/gal on my way home there was some up hills and I was doing ~140km in spots but that seems a wee bit low.

What are other folks getting on the HWY for fuel milage? When doing the speed limit (70 mph or less) a little over 40. It'll go up as I slow down and down as I speed up. Overall 30 to 45.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, mileage can vary wildly depending on:

1. How long you warm up the bike (especially if you make a lot of short hops).
2. How high you rev before shifting into next higher gear.
3. Cruising speed on highway.
4. How much stop-and-go traffic you encounter.

Your 37 MPG sounds reasonable.

Your '83 has the same specs as my '85 700.......it's a 4gal tank - but you can usually squeeze a tad bit more in it if the gas pump works slowly.

After reading a lot here on the Forum and doing a little research on the Rotella T Oil, I'm thinking that may well be about the best option or at least the best AFFORDABLE option for oil. I've always used Mobil 1 or Amsoil in my GS, but I think that is changing to Rotella on it's next change.

As far as mileage goes, I get 50 to 52 mpg these days commuting to work, which is 33 miles each way of 95% open highway driving at 55 to 60mph. If I hold the rpm's down to 4000 or less (50mph with stock gearing) I can get 58 to 60 mpg. That said, I got a light throttle hand these days with gas prices the way they are - but to be honest, in the 21 years I've ridden this bike I don't think I've ever gotten worse than 40-45 mpg even when I romped on it pretty hard.

I so gotta agree with mid or low 40s and up into the 50s, 37 is not good for a 750. Your tank will hold 15.5L and if you get into the reserve, more, total is 19L.

Wow you folks are great thanks so much for the perfect info/answer to my questions. Good to know I have 15L on main and another 4L on reserve. So at a conservative 40mpg one should get ~270km/tank or ~170 miles/tank. Start looking for a station at ~250kms eh....

Also good to know about the Rotella oil option. My left foot was wet on my inogeral trip as my stator case is leaking a bit when it warms up so I'll change out the gasket when I change up the oil and filter.

Thanks again folks and have safe riding!
