    Barke Caliper RFI

    I have discovered that my rear caliper is sticking.

    I have obtained the replacement seals, but was wondering about how to go about disassembling the actual caliper. Specifically, how does one get the pistons out? and then how to proceed

    Is there anyone with some step by step info? This appears to be left out of my manual

    A lot of people have had success with taking the caliper off and forcing compressed air into the hole that the banjo fitting bolted onto. If you don't have a compressor, take the caliper off without unbolting the brake line, take the pads off, and gently press the brake pedal until the pistons pop out. Be sure to inspect the pistons for pitting, if they are pitted replace them or the new seals won't do you much good. Only use brake fluid to lubricate the parts as you reassemble them, and make sure the caliper is squeaky clean before reassembly.

      If they are really seized one way to force them out is to pump grease in there with a grease gun... You can get a lot of pressure in there that way. It can be messy when they let go though!

      Make sure your replace all the seals after... they don't like grease.

        grease is a mess, air or brake pump should do it...if it doesn't either you don't have enough air pressure or your master cylinder is crap...both methods create alot of pressure but if corrosion/rust is that bad squirt some penetrating oil in to break up the corrosion/rust and try again.

          Thanks for the replies guys,

          I will have to tackle this on tuesday. Hopefully it will be uneventful. The pistons should come out with brake pressure - they move in now, but they dont retract as they should. Cant be good for gas milage!

          Then the task of flushing, filling and bleeding the brake line

          ps - I must type dyslexically. How do I correct the title of the post?
