    Manifold boot question

I've been looking at my 1980 GS850G and trying to clean up the carbs. The intake manifold/boot between the carbs and the cylinders (that bolts onto the cylinder and has the rubber boot that connects to the carb) has a threaded hole on the side. My bike, which I just bought, has hex bolts installed on the inside, meaning the inside of the pipe with the flow. That doesn't make any sense to me. Can anyone help me out with what the holes are for and what is supposed to go in them?

    THANKS!

The hole in the boot is for installing a vacuum fitting when you sync the carbs. There are allen head cap screws installed from the factory so it sounds like someone changed yours.

Install the screw from the outside like they are suppose to have. If the boots are dry, hard, and cracked, replace them. And make sure to replace the large O-ring between the boot and the head. They dry out and allow airleaks which will disrupt the carburetion.

    Good luck.

Nessism has it right except I've never seen allens in there always phillips heads. While your that far down replace the o-rings under the boots. They are item 29, with the vacuum port plugs being items 27 and 28 at http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit...9150#stay#stay. LOL!

Doesn't matter what they were from the factory, anyone who willingly puts philips screws back on their bike is completely nuts IMHO.

Get some stainless allen head screws and slap 'em in there from the outside. Sounds like someone was trying to "pretty up" the bike while sacrificing a tiny bit of airflow by hiding the bolts.
