shaft drive lubrication question

My bike says to use 90 wt hypoid gear oil on the left side gear case and on the rear end at the rear wheel. I have been changing the oil in both places about every 6 months with regular 90 wt hypoid gear oil.

my question is: is it ok to use Mobil 1 75w 90 hypoid gear oil in both?
i put it in the rear diff last night, but not sure about the rest.
i have a 1980 gs850g

That's what I use in the final drive on my 650. Should be fine.

On my 650 (and GS 650s in general) the engine oil is used to lube the secondary drive gear. So there is no fill port for the secondary drive. It should be fine to use the 75 w90 on the secondary drive on your 850 though.

By the way, factory spec is every 7500 miles for those. You don't need to change it that often.

But what if he drives 15,000 miles per year? :shock:

That would work out to changing it every 6 months. 8-[

My Gold Wing suggests inspecting the final drive oil every 8,000 miles and replacing at 24,000. I just do it when I change the rear tire, which happens about every 20,000 miles or so, or about every 15 months.

Yes, even here in the "frozen north", also called southwest oHIo, I ride a LOT. Looking back in my log book, it appears that I have ridden 14,775 miles in the last 12 months. This does not include a couple short trips (about 200 miles) ridden on my wife's 850 or about 15,000 miles in the cages.

I ride my GS1100GK an average of 12K or 13K miles a year, and only change the middle-gear and final-drive lube once a year, at the end of the riding season in early December.

Bike has a total of 120,000 miles on it, running fine, so once a year is enough.
