    Headgasket done! Questions though...

After a horrible oil leak out the headgasket, I bought a full gasket set for my '81 GS850GL. Everything went well, with the exception of the 1/2 moon plugs in the head, leaking oil. I bought new ones, and wanted opinions on whether I should re-torque the head bolts, or just check them while I'm in there? I've put about 300 miles on the bike since.

Also, could someone tell me if the '81 850 and 1100 use the same flywheel, or stator rotor? I had mine off and now have a bad vibration above 4.5K RPM.

Thanks for any help, or info!!!

Couldn't hurt to torque the head bolts. Not sure about the flywheel.

You should retourque the head after 500 mile break in period. Also check the valve clearance. Did you synchronize the carbs after the job? This might be causing the vibration.
Did you take the flywheel off after the gasket job and then had the vibration? Or did the vibration start after the removal of it? Did you put an 1100 flywheel in it?

I actually had another 850 motor, minus the stator and flywheel. So when mine blew the headgasket I swapped in that motor, using my flywheel. Well turns out that motor was junk! So I ended up buying the gasket set and fixing my original motor, and putting my flywheel back on it and now I have the vibration. That's about the only thing I could see causing it.

I also have a spare '81 1100 motor, and was wondering if I could swap on that flywheel to see if that was the problem. I've never synched the carbs, but was thinking of it doing it anyways. I just never have, because the bike runs so good. \\/

I had a local machine shop balance my clutch hub. I wonder if the same can be done with a starter clutch-stator rotor?
