Don't use those additives in your oil. Just replace the tach seal if that what it is.

Taking off the tach cable is easy: take some pliers and grab onto the serated section of the tach cable and turn - counter clockwise to loosen.

Yes, it looks like the tach seals. Here's all you need to know:

        http://bwringer.com/gs/tachcableseals.html An excellent article.

BTW, what is that stuff you put on the engine? It looks like a double-barrel loogie blast.

            No hill for a climber!

            Mr. Shirley Serious,

Yep, I'd say that looks like a tach cable leak. They really are easy to fix. Heck, even I was able to fix mine using Mr. bwringer's "how to" pictures. Job should take you less than half an hour. Just remember which way the seal goes. I didn't pay attention when I took it apart and had to look closely at the pictures a few times to make sure I put it back together properly. And as for cleaning your engine, I like Simple Green. Here's my little engine cleaning thread.

            Thank you for your indulgence,

Is the tach seal located right behind the serrated section? Because I tried taking out the tach cable many times and believe me, that sucker won't move. The ridges are worn down from trying to remove it. The next best thing would be to use Seal-All on the leaky area, which is what that snot looking stuff is.

No insult to your intelligence, but if you dont have your vice grips on just the serrated portion, and instead have them on the cylindrical portion beyond the serrated portion then that is part of the motor and can not move.I did the same thing on mine once.

None taken, believe me, I made sure something like that wouldn't happen.

But I was just looking at the bike, and I think I found the source of the leak. The tach cable has a tear in it that goes halfway around its girth right above where it connects to the metal part. I just put some snot...excuse me, Seal-All on it and it should be dry and ready in a few hours.

Put down the tube of monkey snot and step away from the bike.

Now, take a deep breath and get some pliers or vice grips like Ron suggested. From the right side of the engine, grab onto the serrated portion of the tach cable and turn that bad boy down or counter clockwise when looking from the front. If it doesn't come off I'll jump a plane and come do it for you. Tach cables are cheap so order one up and do the job right. By the way, oil should not be moving up into the cable itself so your tach gear is leaking - small seal on the inside, not the large o-ring on the outside.

I've got heavy duty pliers and it still won't come off. I'm starting to think it's welded on there. I put the Seal-All on there a few hours ago, so it should be dry enough to tape up and put another coat of SA on. This is the last resort because the cable will simply NOT come off.

Very strange that the cable doesn't want to come off. Are you turning it to unthread? Sorry if this sounds like I'm talking down to you but check the photos for how to do it.

                        1) Grab serrated portion of cable with pliers
                        2) Turn to unthread - push pliers down

The last photo shows removing the 8mm screw which holds in the gear. You are going to have to take this off as well to extract the gear (after removing the cover I think).

Yep, I did everything you did and explained. Word for word, except that your engine is a lot cleaner than mine. I am simply, physically unable to unthread it. It's not like I'm not trying, but the serrated portion is very worn down and no matter how hard I turn it, it won't budge. And yes, I took the gas tank off and left the 8mm screw on.

Purchase a new tacho cable, tacho drive seals etc. Remove the 8mm bolt, remove the housing, mount in a vice and soak in PB blaster or similar product, allowing it to soak down into the thead area. Then mount the drive housing into the vice(wrap it in one layer of rag to reduce scarring) clamp on vice-grips and do not give up until the cable is out.surprisingly it wont matter if you destroy iy as you have a new one, just be careful of the housing.
Replace the seals and fit a new cable. And clean the monkey snot off the bike.
