Correct position for measuring valve clearances on Suzuki GS1000 1979

    Hi Guys

I have a 1979 GS1000E, for which I have a haynes workshop manual. It mentions to measure the valve clearances with the lobes in the straight up position. I have seen some threads stating that you can get some inaccurate readings in this position. Would you please be able to tell me the best position to get accurate readings please.

If you search under my name there is a post from Nessim with the pages from the Suzuki manual there. You can download & print them.

It's different from Haynes, Clymer etc.

Think the thread is call Valve Adjust or similar. Would be from about Easter.

Forget that old post of mine and just do this...

Position exhaust cam lobe on #1 facing forward parallel to the gasket surface and check E1 & E2.

Position exhaust cam lobe on #4 facing forward parallel to the gasket surface and check E3 & E4.

Postion intake cam lobe for #1 facing straight up (relative to gasket surface) and check I1 & I2.

Position intake cam lobe for #4 facing straight up (relative to gasket surface) and check I3 & I4.

Clearance for all 8 valve engines, and 400/450 is 0.03 - 0.08 mm. Shims come in 0.05 mm intervals. 'X' shims are fatter versions of the regular shims (nice for getting the clearance 'just right'.

Thank you very much for the information it is greatly appreciated. I will check the clearances this afternoon. I am working through the list of checks and adjustments to get the GS1000 running spot on. My first point of call is the valve adjustments. I have purchased a Dyna S ignition, splitfire plugs, Dyna coils and Dyna leads. Once I have sorted that side, I have got 4 carb repair kits for which I shall be only using certain parts, I am led to understand if the jets are in good condition stick with them. I shall be then bench synching and adjusting and finallly vacuum synching. My carbs have bellmouths fitted and I run currently a Harris 4 into 1, I am thinking of purchasing a Vance & Hines 4 into 1

Why the Splitfire plugs? Suzuki recommends NGK/ND - tried and true (plus cheaper).

Has your bike been rejetted for the pipe/bellmouths (I assume these are air filters or velocity stacks)? If not, they need to be. You can save a lot of time if you just purchase a Dynojet stage 3 kit instead of trying to rejet yourself.

            Hi there,

Yes the bellmouths are velocity stacks, the mains at the moment are 120,s my friend. What does the Dynojet stage 3 kit include please.

Correct position for measuring valve clearances on Suzuki GS1000 1979 ?

I think most people stand and lean over or squat beside the bike. I prefer a nice little bench. What I want to get is a lift. ;-)
