One suggestion, a little sealer on the bottom half of the half moon pieces is a good idea to ward off oil leaks. Doesn't effect the cover seal but keeps the small rubber pieces from squirting out.

Smooth operator
Mr. tconroy,
The main difference was that the bike is noticeably smoother. It may be just a hair quicker revving up through the gears, but I couldn't say for sure. I need another test ride. :-D
The idle is the same, didn't change a bit that I could notice by my tachometer. The motor noise is the same too. I thought for a split second that it was going to be noisier (since I went .09mm on a couple of exhaust clearances). The first time I started it I heard a little extra tapping that wasn't there before. But as soon as the oil (which I had just changed) started circulating, the noise went away.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff

Mr. bwringer is planning a valve adjustment page to go along with his other great tutorials. I'll drop him a note and let him know that he's welcome to any and all pictures and descriptions. I also might be able to scrape up enough web space to host this little "how-to". By the way, thanks for your help with all this too. :-D
Note: Edited post #3 for clarity and best practice procedures.

Good question! We need posts like this to be a Sticky so all the newbies can see. I've been thinking about making up a FAQ page and would really dedicate myself to putting something good together if I knew it wouldn't just go away as the thread died.
Regarding this thread, one problem is that you will have to keep the photos available FOREVER or people will not be able to see them. Taking your text/photos and putting them into PDF format might be a good idea (like the VM carb rebuild article in the Garage section). At any rate, great job for sure and keep up the good work.Ed

That is a great idea! I have the technology to do that. I'll make that my project for this week.

BC has contacted me, and I'll be taking the photos and descriptions and finally finishing that valve adjustment page on my site soon. I'll also throw in a few of my own tips here and there.

GS850 Valve Adjustment PDF file is online
Hello friends,
I've put my pictures and notes into a PDF file and hung it out on the web. Mr. bwringer will soon be putting together another terrific tutorial on the subject, with more in-depth detail, on his web page. But for those of you who want to, you may download my file here. This webspace is on my "BikeCliff" webpage (which isn't a page at all, I'm just storing this one file at the moment) and will stay there as long as I pay my ISP bill. :-D

Another edit with more info
Greetings,
I've just edited post #6 again to add information about shim sizes, calculating replacement shim sizes, and a handy tool called a digital caliper (vernier or micrometer).
It's also an excuse for a shameless bump. :-D
If you like the thread, send a note to Frank and maybe he'll make it a sticky next to the carburetor spec thread. You can also download a PDF version with most of this information here.
This information will also be included in another fine tutorial by Mr. bwringer (Brian) at http://www.bwringer.com/gs/ .
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff

Click on my name, send me an e-mail with something about GSR or valve adjust in the subject line, and I will send you an Excel spreadsheet that will help you keep track of your shims and figure the proper clearances. I have gotten a few replies back from people that have used it with good results. 8-[
