I did a search and came empty handed. Does anyone have a Factory Manual for the 1983 GS1100ED? I want info for both the fork oil wt. and standard oil level. My factory manual only goes to the 1982 GS1100EZ. Are the specs the same for both models? Thanks

The specs ought to be VERY close. I'm sure their recommendation is for 15w oil (or ATF which is usually considered to be 15w).
My recomendaton is to fill the forks with the oil level 6" from the top of the fork with it fully compressed (and all air pumped out by working the forks for several strokes). Use as light of an oil as you think you can, this will help keep the unit planted on whoop-type bumps - but you want it heavy enough to not pogo either. I run 5w in my 700 and I'm weighing over 260 lbs at the moment and I can't complain about how this is working for me. -
the only differences between 82 and 83 1100E's that I am aware of in regard to the forks is they changed wheels and the fittings on the anti dive were changed. (I have both 82 and 83 1100E's) otherwise the forks are the same.
I use good old fashioned dextron ATF, good balance between firm and soft and on the 82and 83 E's you can always adjust the damping with the knobs on the forks.Comment

From what I have learned over time is, ATF is about 7 1/2 wt. Oh, do the damping adjuster valves get clogged if the fork oil is not changed often enough? The forks feel very firm with fresh 15 wt oil and the adjusters set at #1. I will try the ATF and maybe some 10 wt. fork oil. Thanks for the info.Comment
