Suzuki GS1000 Valve cover gasket

Hi Guys,

When fitting the valve cover gasket do you need to use any gasket sealant or does it just go on dry. It is a normal gasket not the silicon variety.

I would recommend dry.

Dry is fine. Suzuki uses sealer to hold the half moon pieces in which is what I do.

If you don't mind waiting for the sealant to dry its ok to use it if you want. I was always taught to put in the cam end plugs and valve cover gaskets perfectly dry.

Following the advice of someone I trust, I sprayed mine (dry paper-type) with WD40 before I put it on. It's only been a couple hundred miles, but there's no leaks or weepage.

I'm of the school that wouldn't use silicone on a gasket if you paid me. I spent too much time trying to pick out little silicone pieces from the motor as a result of my PO's escapades. Its not necessary for the valve cover gasket at all. I don't use it on the half-moons (though it is recommended as stated above) and never had problem there either.

If you do insist on using it, check with someone who knows how to use it. Only a very, very thin amount is required.

I would not use silicone. I did one time, and it caused the gasket to slip out of position, and then I had a leak.
