    Igniter Issues 83 Gs550e

Ok, here I go.......carbs rebuilt, new plugs, everything is airtight...Bike runs so-so. Brought the bike to have carbs vac synched and the mechanic dynoed the bike. Bike is putting out 1/2 it's HP (approx 22). So...start checking things.. Coils check out ok per haynes manual. Timing is ok (advance works)...but, while checking the timing, I saw that the light was not pulsing nice and steady, but was instead...missing, causing the timing mark to jump. Pulled the igniter box and tried to check it per manual. The open and closed circuits were ok, but the other reading were either WAY OFF or there were none at all. So....would the bike even run with a faulty igniter? Would a bike that is misfiring lose 1/2 its' HP? Can I use an igniter from a different bike (roughly same year, don't realy want to spend $400.00 on a new one). If you need any other info, lemme know. Thanks in advance.

    Try one of these...

Only prob is they take between 4 to 6 weeks to get.....but they are better then stock...and it isn't another used part...Dyna dosen't make one for the 550 but Boyer Bransden does but it takes 3-5 weeks to get.

EXACT same symptoms my bike had when its ignitor was out. Glad to see you put a timing light on it. Thats a good way to check. My unit also failed the tests in the FSM, but the bike would run partially. I would follow Kevin's suggestions for sources to pick up an aftermarket unit.

Thanks guys. Lee, what were some of your bikes "symptoms" when it had the faulty igniter?

It would run decent at low rpm, but once you began revving it, it would break up. It sputtered and backfired. So I put the timing light on it, and found that the light would trigger at random spots in the rotation of the engine. As it got to higher revs, it jumped around more. I would not be surprised at those low horsepower numbers with the bad ignitor.

At the time, I posted a few questions on here about whether or not an ignitor can work partially, allowing the bike to run at lower rpms. Others on the forum corroborated my suspicion that the ignitor can work partially. Sounds like you may be in the same boat.

Boyer emailed me back and said if the bike has points they could help. I know this is a stupid question, but, my bike doesn't have points, right? I know what they are, but unless I am looking in the wrong spot, this bike does not have them. So, boyers product will not work, am I correct saying this?

They have a kit for the GSX550 Electronic Ign. The kit # you need is

                KIT00292

Did you tell them it was a GS or a GSX as it was in the UK if you don't they think it's a older GS in the UK your bike would be a GSX550ESE
                Hope that helps.

with coils is around 300. shipped...Look at it this way. You wont have to mess with ignition for a very long time...if it only last you 10 years thats 30 bucks a year, not to mention the power gain and the ease of starting and the better mpg and the joy of riding you bike!!!! I always hate to dish out dollars but once I make something more enjoyable and better running it's worth every RED CENT!!!!!

                        Just my two cents worth

Got the header all apart, but my father is going on vacation Sunday for about 2 or 3 weeks so we will have to wait till they get back to blast it.

Paully, did you check out those sites for the igniters? Boyers site is good and has alot of info, Do you think we could put one of those in? Read the data sheets for kits 00082 or 00292
