Does it matter which side of the valve shims are up?

I took them all out and measured them, but I didn't think it mattered which side was up when I put them back in. I've done some searching but I can't seem to find the definitive answer.

Is there a top and bottom to the shims? Does it affect the operation of the engine if they're in upside down?

Mechanically, it makes no difference. But if you look you'll see that the numbers on the shims are only on one side. If you put this side up it will wear the numbers and make them hard to read. I try to put the numbers down, unless it's a used shim and the numbers are already worn. Used shims will have a large circle worn on one side, the "down" side", and a small circle worn on the "up" side. At least that's what I've found in my 850GT.

PS, by the way, Kawasaki KZ1000 shims fit the GS motor too.

Actually, they are smaller and will not fit snug into the bucket. Not recommended since they can spit out.
