    Vance & Hines 4 to 1

I just got a Vance and Hines 4 to 1 muffler and header package. So far I'm not too impressed. The exhaust headers a needed to be dressed in order to fit into the head...and I am nowhere close to getting the muffler to side onto the collector pipe? Anyone else see the muffler "no fit" problem? The bike is at GS 1981G. Thank you.

What I noticed on mine is where they slip together silencer and 4-1 the ends are oval and not round.

Called Vance and Hines. They said it was not uncommon to have too much chrome...get a dremel tool and grind some off. Okay.

My Vance and Hines also would not go together at first. Not even close. I took a small propane torch and heated the megaphone for a few minutes and then it slipped right on. It sealed so good that there are no leaks. Just be sure that you have the header mounted on the bike so you can slip it together and line it up in one shot, as you wont be able to turn it when it cools after about 30 seconds.
          Just my 2 cents worth.

I also just put one on my 81 1000L and it fit perfectly into the cylinder head. I tightened it up there but did have to sand some on the collector end and also greased it so the muffler half could slip on. On mine I did have to fabricate a hanger since it did not directly bolt up to the rear peg mount. I used a muffler hanger from the rear of the peg mount, flat washers, lock washers, and a spacer. The angle rolls when you twist the pipe but it looks good and with the spacer it is securly mounted. I love mine and have had several comments on how good it sounds even from the Harley boys. Can't beat that old school sound. I am still running the stock air box but am in the process of sorting out some minor jetting alterations. I will post what I end up with to help others.
