    Winter Project

I'm seriously considering rebuilding my motor this winter and was looking for anything performance (carbs, cams, pistons, rods, crank, anything...) I'd like to see if I can squeeze a bit more horsepower out of my bike. I'm not a huge inline four fan, and I'm fairly new to motorcycles, but I've been building cars for about 5 years now and feel comfortable with some of the hardest jobs out there.

I'd like to try to gain about 15 to 20 horse and maybe go for a bit more of a drag look. I've got access to a ton of parts for these things, but most of them are stock parts.

Does anyone think it's worth it? Also, where could I start to find parts and start budgeting a build?

    Thanks

    Erik

First, you could start by giving us a clue.

    Are you adding 15-20 horsepower to a 550 or an 1150? :?

One of them is easier than the other. 8-[

Hey Erik, If its a 250 forget it.... but if its a bike you like and want to give it a little bump then start here in the search feature with Pipes, Pods and if you got some spare change try Piston kits. Pumping up a motor means the rest of the bike will feel left behind. You should go after some suspension mods too. Good Luck !

Woops... it's a '77 GS750. I've got pods on it and will most likely go to a 4-1 pipe set. I'd like to go further though. This winter I was hoping to blast the frame and get it powder coated and maybe even strip the body panels and paint them too.

I work part-time at a chassis shop that my buddy owns and have all the necessary tools (tig welder, sand blaster, pneumatic tools, ect...) and knowledge to pull it off. What I don't know, is where to find the engine kits and where to find after market (ie... performance) parts. I'm pretty open to ideas, and the ultimate deciding factor for how radical this thing gets will be money. I also don't want something that's gonna tear itself to pieces.

The bike ran great until recently, but I'm finishing up the carbs and swapping out the intake o-rings and it should run great again. The bike is just lethargic in comparison to a lot of other, similar, bikes I've ridden. I paid 200 bucks for this thing and don't want to invest more than 1500 total into it.

A pretty common upgrade to the 750 is the 844 piston kit from Wiseco. Quality product from what I understand.

Will my stock transmission/clutch handle the power from that?

Not only that, but where can I find cams/springs/shims etc? I'd rather not spend close to 700 bucks on a big-bore kit to have a crappy upper end...

Will I need to do anything with the transmission? How much should I expect to gain by just increasing CC's? Also, are these motors made where you get the block bare, take it to a machine shop, they remove the sleeve/bore it, and then install the new sleeve? Thanks in advance.

You might post this over in Performance Mods and get better results.

There's some guys that hang out there that have done major mods. and are pretty seriously into drag racing etc.

The block is bored and honed with the sleeves in the block, just had mine done. You take in your pistons, and the shop measures them at the proper place (you'll need that spec.) and does the bore/hone.

When you put it back together, its not like a car, where you tap the pistons into the sleeves first. You put your pistons on the connecting rods and lower the block on to the pistons, inserting two at a time (usually). Also, your connecting rods are all one piece and your crank was pressed together with them in place so they CANNOT be removed without taking the crank out of the bike, and then taking the crank apart. So you'll want to make sure your connecting rods are within spec.

My opinion is to get a different bike. The 8 valve GS750 is a classic bike but long in the tooth if you are looking for performance. Trying to add a bunch of HP is going to cost a lot of money and the bike will still be slower than a common street rat 600cc CRB/GSXR/Ninja etc.

Keep the 750 if you like owning one of the best all round bikes of it's era. Ditch it if you want a crotch rocket.
