Does anyone know the difference in the exhaust port height between these 2 motors ? Has anyone tried to fit a GS1000 pipe on a GS1100 engine ? Any advice greatly appreciated. :-D

1st time post on GS Resources Forum,
Want to replace original exhaust on1980 GS1100ET. Looked at 4:1 Mac and V&H pipes, not crazy about off center collector pipe. Located a pipe that has the collector dead center under the engine for 1980 GS1000S. I do know that the exhaust flanges are identical.

Welcome to the forum .. (until BassCliff does it officially).
Great question for your first post.
We like to see pics of bikes.

The '80 GS1100ET is a 4-valver. It would be VERY unlikely that the pipe would fit.
Make sure to check when buying an aftermarket pipe that it will specifically fit your bike. Some manufacturers make a pipe that will fit both the GS750 and GS1100, others are specific to each bike. I had an old Yoshimura pipe that fit my GS750 but would not fit hte GS1000 no matter how much persuasion i used.
Welcome to this great site.
If the pipe does not work out for you, i know somebody that would be interested in it. Oh yeah, that would be me.2@ \'78 GS1000

I just looked under my 650 and my 850 to be sure, but the oil drain plug is pretty well centered.
That means that you would have to remove the exhaust to change the oil.
Personally, I am not convinced that the possible performance advantage of having all the pipes exactly the same length is all that great. Yes, that would maximize the power, but only at one particular engine speed. Having pipes ever so slightly different would reduce the peak a bit, but would spread the power band by a couple hundred rpm or so, as each pipe came to its own peak, making it more forgiving on the street. If you are going to be racing, with long stretches at a particular rpm, I can see maximizing power at that rpm, but most of us don't live on the track. 8-[

Thank you, rphillips and to everyone one else for their response to my post. I'm mainly concerned with the header pipe assembly and the length of the header pipes. I was planning to do some fabricating, welding & bending on the secondary collector pipe. I have a new S/S & Carbon Jardine can (GSXR1000) that I'm going to use. Thanks again

Hey Steve, great point about the oil plug, I'm not looking at it from a performance advantage view point. It has more to do with a certain look that I'm going for. Thanks again

Hey Mike (mriddle), thanks, I had purchased a new 1981, sold it in 86 (kids) and I just found this 1980 up in Northern Ontario in pristine condition. I'm riding again after 20 years, it's amazing how time flies. Thanks again.

Hey howdy hey!
Mr. cdnbooch,
Sorry I'm late. I'm actually working today. :?
Let it be known that on this day you are hereby cordially and formally welcomed to the GSR Forum as a Junior Member in good standing with all the rights and privileges thereof. Please note that "good standing" implies pictures! :-D
Isn't it great to be back in the saddle? I was away for 20+ years until I picked up my GS850GT in March. I've been loving every minute of it. And the good folk here have been teaching me to be a better motorcycle mechanic and a better motorcycle rider. I think you'll like it here. Thanks for joining us.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
