Vrooom......
Don't sweat it Greg, like they've said the dial-in on the jetting will be spot on 80% of the time......My old 1000 with a Yoshimura/Kerker combo dialed in, only gave a slight flat spot. A flat spot is a section of the RPM band where the motor seems weak & not wanting to win up thru that "band" with much enthusiasm.
As to the sound.....riding with two or three buddies on a straight drone down a wide freeway ,all in formation, the sound emmenating from all the exausts is really quite something to behold!

What you consider loud may be music to another's ears. Look at Harley riders, they love noisy 8O (my perspective) pipes. I love my bike barely making a sound. Stealthy power, that is what I like. 8)

That sweet sound

How about the sound of a radial engine of an old prop fighter? The silky smooth sound of P-51 V-12 fighter? How bout the exotic sounding(but lousy machine) Kawasaki H-2 750 with expansion chambers?
Sorry, but the Harley staccato sound is just obnoxious to me. The current crop of sportbikes with the snarl of 6 grand just poking along down the road just sounds too busy, like an angry hornet. The low RPM growl of our bikes is just right

K&N jet kit
Greg,
I just put a K&N (Dynojet) stage 3 kit on my '83 GS1100E with a Supertrapp stainless 4-1 and K&N pods. Set up as recommended the idle was a bit rough and there was significant surging around 3000-4000rpm. Both symptoms are covered in the troubleshooting guide of the instructions. I turned the mixture screws out 1/2 turn and raised the needles to the 5th of six grooves. Now the bike runs better than it ever has. It starts better, idles better, and runs noticably stronger. I still get some very minor surging and may try raising the needles some more but I have to say the results are impressive.

I hate noise from any motorcycle, Harley or otherwise.
My second 1982 GS850G, which I owned from 92 to 96, had the exhaust system rot away. I replaced it with a Vance & Hines 4 into 1. I lived with it for three riding seasons. That was too much noise from me. I'm glad I no longer need that V & H.
I like things nice and quiet. I'm getting old, and my hearing needs to be preserved for as long as possible. It's all downhill from here!
