    82 gs1100 shaft drive

    does anyone know , are there things to know about removing rear wheel for someone who has'nt done it before ?

    Pretty straight forward. Hang the rear caliper with a bungee, drop the shocks so you can move the swing arm to where you can slide the axle out with hitting the exhaust. Check the drive and driven splines for excess wear once you get it apart and use a good moly grease on them on reassembly.

        That's right, Don't look at the splines & think "aw it looks ok, if you have the wheel off, grease those splines, wheather they need it or not.

          Don't use moly grease from an auto store -- it's only 3% to 6% molybdenum. Drop by your friendly Honda dealer for this stuff. Less than $10 should get you a lifetime supply:



          Clean everything off with WD-40 and rags, then give the splines on both the bike side and the wheel side a nice thick coat of 60% moly grease. No need to pack it in -- just coat using an old toothbrush or something.

          The 60% moly grease isn't much good for anything else, in case you were wondering. Don't try to use it on bearings or things that slide or move much. It stains and it's stinky. But it is Da Bomb for preventing spline wear -- other types of grease simply won't do much.

            DOH! I kept taking the muffler off lol. I was wondering why I had to lossen the shocks!

              Do yourself a small favour and add a few piece of 2x4 or better still 2x6


              Put one where the side stand can reach it, then roll the back wheel over a second one and put the side stand down.

              Place a third piece under the centre stand and lift the bike onto it.

              This will give you extra clearance for easy removal of the wheel from under the fender on a G or GL model, and it is almost mandatory if you have a GK or if there is a lower mudflap installed.


              OH YES....

              when you remove the rear axle watch for the spacer, and its position. Be sure you put it back where it belongs when re-installing.
