    Dumb question no doubt

    I am sure this should be here some where, but I couldn't seem to find it. I wanted to change my oil tonight, but the largest socket I have is 19mm and it is not big enough. Before I go out and buy a whole set of over sized sockets, dose anyone know the socket needed for the drain plug on a 1978 GS 750 E. Also are there any other large sockets needed for this bike, if so, what are they?

    Actually, its not metric but it works, try a 3/4 inch..thats what i used and had no problem with stripping or rounding off.

      Try the funky spark plug wrench in the factory tool kit. (Still got it ?)

        your rear wheel axle bolt is prob bigger than 19mm dunno for sure havnt got that far

          I don't need no stinking socket..... I Use a cresent wrench and tear up my knuckles :-D

            If I remember I'll check in the morning. I think it's 22mm.

              thats what I use! perfect fit and right length, odd on the 1100E as it has smaller plugs (3/4) the drain plug is still 13/16ths

                The original drain plug has a 21mm hex, but some replacement drain plugs have a 19mm hex. 13/16 (large spark plug socket) is often a little tight, depending on what brand your sockets are, but should work.

                The rear axle nut is (almost always) 24mm, and 15/16 works if that's all you have. I did encounter one rear axle nut the other day on a Honda that was 22mm. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the original nut, though.

                I much prefer to have the proper metric tools, and leave the inch crap to the Harleys and lawn mowers.

                I still have no idea why it's still so hard to get metric tools and fasteners -- even American branded cars have been metric since the '70s.
