gs 550 help
I just got this free bike running ( cleaned carbs ). The carbs have been synched, 100 mains and 42.5 pilots with the fuel screw 2.5 out. the bike revs great but when i'm riding it in gear it cuts out above 3 grand, pull the clutch in and it will rev to 6 grand with no hesitation. Any help or suggestions ? Thanks

What year? And what did you do when you cleaned the carbs? - take them fully apart and replace the o-rings?Ed

could be running lean when above 3k. look for an air leak somewhere.
possible places are the intake boots (easy) or head gasket (awful)
one of the easier ways to check is to start it up, let it idle for a few seconds, then spray carb cleaner (with a nozzle tube) onto each carb boot where it connects to the head. if it bogs when you spray a particular boot, or boots, then you might need to either replace the o-rings or tighten the boot down more.

It's an 81 and I completely rebuilt the carbs, all seals, jets and gaskets. Wouldn't a intake leak stumble show all the time? It revs great in neutral( the slow gear). I'll check it anyway, thanks

I doubt it's an intake leak but if you did not replace the intake boot o-rings, you should because they are almost certain to leak if they are the originals.
FYI, the stock mains are 92.5, not 100's. Do you have a header and/or running pod filters?Ed

The exhaust has been cut off right below the engine. I do plan on pod filters with a 4-1 pipe so I jetted it for that while I was in the carbs. The pods aren't on it at the time. I rode it this morning and went up to 4th gear with absolutely no problems until I went above 3000 rpm in all gears. Does the petcock have a variable flow rate according to vaccum or is it just on or off?Last edited by Guest; 10-07-2007, 10:22 AM.

I reread the thread. Sorry for the short answer but I'm at work./
Did it run OK when the battery was new? If not I'd have to agree with the above. You have alot of angles to look at. Cut pipe. No air filters. Possible intake leaks.
I'd seal the intake, get a good 4-1 pipe, K&N filters and a Dynojet kit if they make one for your carbs. Do you have the two carbs into four cylinder model?1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

No offense taken. The battery was put in yesterday, i checked the spark coming from the boot and it looked pretty good. I will have pods( 4 carbs) soon but I'm not sure about when I'll have the pipe. Do you think I shouldn't even screw with it until I at least get the pods on it? Thanks for your help man.

I take my pods off at the dragstrip so it is possible to jet w/out the K&Ns. Pipe is a different story. Too many variables.
