    kawasaki vm carbs on GS550

I have a set of vm carbs off a 78 KZ650 and i want to know if I could get away with putting them on my 77 GS550. Everything looks more or less the same as my stock vm carbs but there are two key differences. The Kawasaki carbs do not have side air mixture screws (only pilot mixture screws at the base of each carb) and there is no vacuume line coming from any of the carb bodies.
Can I use these carbs and not bother with the vacuume operated petcock?

If the port spacing & size is the same (& choke size is similar) I can't see why not. You'd need an on/off style petcock to go with them.

    You'd probably need to re-jet.

    Measure carefully.

That's kind of what I was thinking...different petcock and correct jetting.
About the side air mixture screws...I've not seen a set of VM mikuni's without side mounted air mixture screws. On this particular set of carbs the place where the air mixture screw should be is quite sealed up. The only way to adjust the mixture ratio is from the pilot screw. seems simple enough....

Yes, there is a seal there, but it is very easy to remove. Drill a 3/32 or 1/8" hole in the middle of the "seal". Be careful when the drill is just about all the way through so you don't go too deep and ruin the screw under the seal. Now you can insert a drywall screw in the hole and twist it out. Now you can adjust both screws, as the engineers intended.

So what you are saying is that the air mixture screws are there but are covered over. Thanks for that piece of info. I'll get those seals off and give those carbs a thorough cleaning/dunk.

I have 28mm VM kawi carbs on my GS1000E from the Z1R with very good results. I did this because they are 2mm bigger than the suzuki version and have accelerator pumps. There is no bottom fuel mixture screws (only top air bleed). Idle mixture was a little difficult to dial in but I got. I have no reference but the top end is killer for a close to stock engine so I am sure it is making more ponies than a stocker. Dan
