FYI, commercially available stainless bolts are NOT a good material for load bearing members since the higher strength alloys tend to be brittle. SAE grade 5/8 bolts are hardened alloy steel and a much better choice for an application like you have.Ed

"All the weight of the bike is on the bolt alone."
Yes but it's a whole lot less weight than the G models that do the same thing but with a welded stud to the swingarm instead of a bolt. It's the same principle really. I only weigh 140 lbs. so I'm not adding much to it. Things like this make me wish I would have studied Physics and Mechanics instead of Computer Science. :-D

Thanks Nessim but I cannibalized my '80 GS1000G for the parts I needed to get this '80 1100ET running and I'd like to get the G back on the road some day.

after reading this i should clarify it a bit i think...Grade 8 steel is very hard, making it very strong, and especially usefull in certain instances, but in this situation, being that its so hard, it will have a tendency to SNAP/SHEAR without warning rather than bend, and then break...just my two cents..
