My 1982 GS 650G is in need of a little overhaul. It seems that 2 of the valve stem seals have gotten hard and are causing oil to leak into the cylinders. Also, the head gasket seems to be leaking, noticable at higher rpms. My question is what would be the cost to fix this problem if I had to bring it to a shop, and what would the parts cost. I also have to do the front forks because the seals are leaking. I don't want to rebuild the whole engine as nothing else is wrong with it. Its just that the bike fouls plugs and runs rough because of the oil problem. I rather get it fixed now then cause more problems later on.

I intend to remove the front forks and bring them in to save on labor. They say that since they are older type forks that it should be cheap as they are easier to work on.

Is it possible/easy to do the valves myself or should I bring it somewhere?

Fork seals are fairly easy. Valve stem seals take more work, but it's a do it yourself deal.
Lots of info here, get the things you need together, get the manual, maybe a knowledgeable assistant. Very inexpensive for the seals, gasket a little more. Some will advise doing a whole top end rebuild while you are in there but if it runs fine now it's not necessary.

And pretty much everything on these old bikes is a do it yourself type thing.

You can do it all yourslef, just start reading the manuals. I prefer the factory manuals, some get by with a Haynes or a Clymers.
The seal replacement will require a spring compressor.
The head gasket will require a top end gasket set, which should have the valve seals included. A full overhaul gasket set from Vesrah is around $80.
Check your compression, if it is within spec then a full top end overhaul is overkill.
You will have to remove the head, which requires that you also remove the cylinder block and replace the base gasket and its orings, which are included in the gasket set.
Fork seals are quite inexpensive; probably around 30 per pair, fluid about 10-15 per pint. You may only need one; I would suggest flushing the fluid completely, which may require a second bottle.
So you are probably looking at around 140 for all parts.

Alright, I have the clymer manual, but I will look into the suzuki one as it looks more detailed.
