Even though I don't have an 850, I decided to download it. Now that I have the manual, I suppose I'll have to start looking for an 850 I can use it on.

I have just changed my oil and filter yesterday and I don't know if this is true all the time but when you drain the oil from the 21mm plug and when it is done draining u plug it back up. Then go and change the filter with oil comming out as well. When I put the new filter back in and cover on, I wanted to clean the drain plug more and thought that if i took it out, no oil would come out, but a good amount actually came out. I guess that's my input is that once you change the filter, there could be more oil possibly now that you let "air" in from the other end???? I could be wrong on this as a newb, but that was my experience yesterday.

        Mr. Johnny K,

That's a great point and I did consider it. I think I wanted to remind the reader to put the plug back in before I forgot to remind the reader to put the plug back in. I didn't want the reader to pour in new oil without first replacing the drain plug. I've done that before.

On my next edit I'll make a note of your suggestion. I appreciate your time.

        Thank you for your indulgence,

              Mr. sasper,

It will help only in general ways. There are a lot of similarities with the motors, forks, brakes, etc. But please note that the 850 is a shaftie while the 550 is a chain so the whole drive mechanism is very different. It makes a good reference, but it will not substitute for a model-specific manual for your bike. They can be had on ebay fairly inexpensively. I strongly encourage you to invest in one.

Otherwise, let us know if/when we can help you. Not everything is in the manual, you know. :-D

              Thank you for your indulgence,

              BassCliff

You can download the factory GS550 manual for free from repairmanualclub.com

850 manual is similar but different in key areas as you might imagine.

Hmmm.... Now that I've scanned the section on rear brakes, it seems that your version, Cliff, is better than the one I paid 40 plus for.

Oh, also for you office-worker types (like me) you can print odd numbered pages first, flip them over into the paper tray, and then print even numbered pages on the other side. Voila! Double-sided printing (save a tree). Just make sure you experiment with a single page first so you know which way to put the paper into the tray for the second side...

I just downloaded it, thanks Clif. I also put it on my flash drive, so I'll have it with me everywhere I go! Am I a geek or what!

Unless of course your office has a Duplex printer.

                            Mr. Goose,

That's not my bike. However, if you go here you can read all about it. The computer itself is used only to record movies from a helmet cam.

                              Nice rig!

The guy definitely spent some time on that, but the video's are pretty annoying with the helmet cam.
