    82 1100 shaft/wiring problem/thanks Steve

Steve , thanks for the diagram, it does not match all of the wiring color code for my bike,is close. when i took the bike things seemed to work, it ran, shut off, headlite worked, horn worked, battery charged, but i only drove 1/2 block and did not really check any thing. Then i took it all apart to make new.while inspecting the harness above the engine i found a wire (black with white stripe melted into another wire, stripped everything back and reinsulated,at that time i noticed it has 12volts on it and all the other black with white stripes have 12 volts ( black/white are ground and shouldnt have 12v ?? Also noticed that as soon as i connect batttery the neutral and or 1,2,3,4,etc gear lamps come on regardless of key position.

I guess ?? the b/w melted into something else and when i fixed it something else went wrong ??

when i disconnect the shift position indicator the 12v on b/w goes away, I then remembered that it did not work when i bought the bike, is there a device in the engine case that shorts out to ground ?

The wiring diagram you sent which I really do appreciate does not match the color code on my shift position wiring so its hard to make decisions about that.

I notice the diagram you sent has A DIODE on the top right of the page just marked DIODE does anyone know where that is and what is its function ? it is in connected eventually with all of the B/W wires.

possibly looking for a new diagram and any help anyone can offer, thanks in advance

    Mike,

The part labeled DIODE is placed in the kickstand light and oil pressure light circuit to prevent electrical back-flow from one circuit to the other. In other words, it keeps the oil light OFF if the kickstand light is ON. Exactly where that diode is, I can't say, I have not seen it on my 850, but would like to find it. I am trying to get the kickstand switch to work, but it seems to be backward, that is, the light comes ON when the stand is UP.

Sorry about the wrong color codes, but that is what is in my Clymer manual.
I have previously identified other problems with the wiring diagrams, this just might be another.

As a rule, a black wire with a white strip is going to be a chassis ground. You should NOT have 12 volts on any of those wires. If it's any consolation at all, your problems fit neatly into an electrical axiom: "If it's doing strange things, it's a bad ground."

You already know there are problems because you have found melted wires. Now the fun begins in trying to determine why they were melted and to make sure you find all the melted wires. If they melted in areas where you can see them, imagine what happened buried in the harness where you can't.

On my 1983 GS1100G, the diode is in the headlight shell, covered in what appears to be clear vinyl.

I thank you too, Mcconnell. I will have to check it out to see if it's there on the 850 as well. 8-[
