82 1100g shaft/shift indicator
does anyone know about the shift ind. electrics in the transmission/replaceable/prone to failure/ how difficult, mine has 12v shorted to chassis ground

I've never seen one fail. I THINK it is located under the dry engine cover on the left side right behind the shift lever. Small oval Bakelite device held in by a couple of screws. Shouldn't be hard to replace.

It's very straightforward -- there's a little spring loaded nubbin sticking out from the shift drum, and it engages a contact on the switch body (the little round plastic thingy described above with six or seven wires coming out of it) for each gear as you go through the gears.
If you look on an online fiche at the "Gear Shifting" diagram, you'll see it. It's sort of hidden from view on the left side of the engine, way back in there...
There's an o-ring that sometimes leaks, but that's about all that can go wrong unless the bundle of wires gets damaged.
You could just unplug the connector and go without the gear indicator. A buddy is building a streetfighter with a GS850 engine, and we're eliminating the gear indicator just to simplify the dash and the wiring.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
