If you use the clear blue urethane 5/16 ths hose you wont have to use clamps.they have to be pushed off.You cannot pull them off.

Just spent a few minutes going over the parts listing on Alpha-Sports and Bike Bandit. The fuel line listing is the same for the 850 and the 550; they list 7x10.2x200 - I assume the dimensions are in mm with 7mm the inside diameter (edit: I mistakenly posted in another thread that the listed ID was 6mm - sorry if I created confusion).

I bought some of this line and the measured ID is 6.25mm. It fits quite snug over the nipple and does not need clamps.

The diameter of the nipple on the petcock for my '79 550 is right at 8mm - not counting the bulge. I'm not sure what the nipple diameter is on an 850.

I have some Goodyear branded 5/16" fuel line and the ID is 7.75mm. When installed on the petcock nipple there is a very slight interference but I was concern about leakage. I wasn't comfortable using this line thus I ordered the factory stuff.

Of course everyone is free to use what they want. I'd suggest clamps on the lines though unless the line fits snug on the nipple.

Did you clean the petcock and carb end with alcohol or something. It has to be dry and free of dirt.I have had these for 2 years and have no problem at all.You could put a wire tie around it.

...or get the proper sized fuel line to begin with.
