 help for re jetting a 1980 550.I am a bit confused on what size jets to put in for a 1980 gs550. I am putting on a 4 to 1 exhaust and pods. Any advice please.Tags: None

 usually one step up from stock specs is all you need. take a look at this site...you can get the stock specs to give you a baseline to move up from. if your bike is a gs550e looks like mains are 92.5 and pilot jet is a 40

 Thanks. Now I need to get the jets. I am looking at a denniskirk catalog and the increments for the pilot jets is 2.5. By going up 1 size I would need a 42.5 correct? What I don't understand is the main jets. There are slot heads and hex heads, not sure which ones to use.  Your best bet is to order a dynojet kit - they list one for the 550M which is the same as your carbs. If you insist on doing it yourself, you are going to have to go up at least 2-3 steps on the main circuit. I'd try raising the needles as well. You might want to try a search on 550 jetting to see what's been done before.Ed

 They generally don't come stock with adjustable needles. Save yourself the headache and buy the DynoJet kit.
 
 Make sure all of your current jets are the correct ones. On my '83 550 the previous owner had done his own re-jet and completely messed it up. My pilots were two sizes too large and the fuel air screws were all over the place.
