    pods

    Im gonna ask alot of questions over the winter so if some seem dumb like this one Im sorry. I believe i already know the answer from using the search feature but I must ask. I like the look of the pods instead of the filter box. is it a must to rejet. Im not looking for performance just looks.

    Because pods let a lot more air into the motor, you must install bigger jets and tune accordingly.

      From experience...and depending on what type of carbs you are running (ive read BS;s are easier to tune with the pods than the old VM style) if youre going to go with pods, plan on banging your head against the wall alot if you're not experienced (like im not) with carbs..lol And if you do get pods...spend the extra bux and get GOOD ones like K&N

        Actually it's the other way around. The VMs will run without an airbox. Try running stock BSs without one. Ain't gonna happen. You know the slides rise mechanically with the VMs and the BSs depend on air flow to rise. This is why you have to drill the slide out so it will rise quicker to make up for the extra air flow.
        I'm not saying you don't have to rejet with the VMs because you do. I'm just saying the BS carbs are more sensitive to the pods.

        What year and model of bike do you have Dude?
        1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
        1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

            dude...you dont realize..but you just solved a major problem for me...lmao

            I was arguing with my pops while he was helpin me workon this XS with BS carbs on it, that of course its not going to run right without the airbox hooked up...and he swore up and down that it wouldnt make that much of a difference (it dies as SOON as you roll on throttle...and wouldnt run off choke) Well he started to honestly get mad about it, so i just shut up cos he bitches so much when hes mad i didnt want to listen to it (hes got that little short guy aggro problem..lol) Ten bucks says i go out there tomorrow, hook that air box up and it runs? lmao

                TCK, you can also do a quickie fix without the hassle of installing the airbox.

                Fold a shop rag in half, drape it over the carb inlets. Use a zip-tie to hold it to the outer carbs and keep it taut over the inner carbs (if it's a 4-cyl). Now it will run reasonably well. This is not accurate enough to do carb jet tuning, but the bike will run.

                  Not to muddy the water but while the BS carbs on the GS do not want to run without an airbox I didn't find this with those on my XS jetted 2 sizes over stock.She ran fine but maybe not as strong as when I put on the pods. At first with no name (EMGOs) she was popping and spitting but switching to Uni-pod foamies fixed that. She now runs like a banshee.

                  The stockers on the GS wouldn't run without the airbox in place but the set I got from KingofVenus (jetted for pods and pipes) would. When the airbox and filter were installed and stock pipes, it ran but poorly with popping on acceleration. With airbox on but filter removed it ran worse. With airbox on with the snorkel but without a filter it runs awesome. Pulls like a freight train, no hesitation or popping. Now all I have to do is find a less restrictive filter.

                  The point I'm trying to make is setting up carbs is a fiddly business of trial and error and there are no absolutes. What might work for you may not for me. Start slow, make one change at a time and record the findings.
                  Keep at it and you'll eventually get it running the way you want.

                      Naw ive just been fiddling with this XS for a few months and the carbs were so nasty it looked like snot when you took them apart. They'd sat for 7 years...I did get it to start, but like i said when you roll throttle on or take the choke off it dies...Imma hook that airbox (or boxes in this case, its a twin and each has its own) since ive cleaned the carbs again REALLY well this time...and we'll see.

                        Am I the only person in North America that can run his bike without an airbox on CV carbs? My GS1100E would run with the airbox removed before I jetted it for pods and I have run a couple other bikes without airboxes on stock CV carbs and they ran as well. They are definitely lean that way and throttle response can be funky, but they ran well enough to allow synchronising with mercury sticks. My 97 ZX-9 ran with no issues at all with the airbox removed, on the stock lean jetting.

                          Speaking of XS Yamaha's and pods...had an XS400 back in the day, and the bike came stock with a two piece airbox w/ paper element air filters - one for each carb located behind the side panels. Ditched the whole system and straped on the pods but the bike ran like crap. The airbox(s) were located a good distance behind the carbs connected with rubber intake runners. I theorized that the intake runner smoothed out the airflow entering the carbs and finally managed to get the bike to run run right by putting the intake runner back on and clamping the pod to the backside of it. Ran great after that.

                          The Suzuki airboxes have little rubber velocity stacks which likewise smooth out airflow entering the carbs. I think that's one reason the bikes require so much rejetting when running pods - the lead-in is eliminated.

                            Thats exactly what this has Nessim.. long rubber boots/runners that connect to the airboxES...they have one for each carb...silly design..but i bet thats my prob...
