    Carb Query

    Just stripped the carbs down on the kitchen table. Didnt make a mess, but my wife was complaining about the smell of old petrol.

    My question is this. Carbs 1 and 2 were all gunged up with a black oily substance, carbs 3 and 4 were clean inside, but they had a light brown powder in the bottom of the float bowls. Anyone know why?

    The gunk is congealed gas. Get some carb dip and soak the body/parts after complete disassembly.

    This photo is of the carbs off my '79 GS550. Not pretty but cleaned up okay.

      Are you sure that's not some alien life form from another planet ?????!!!! I have never seen such a mess! don't tell me that bike ran!!!! How many decades did it sit without running?

          The light brown poweder could be dirt..but it could also be rust from your tank...after your carbs are done...or while even...have a look at your petcock filter...you may want to even consider an inline fuel filter...but if you do so, make sure the one you get will sit vertically or relatively so.

            How long did the bike sit? Keep in mind that if it's on the side stand, especially for a long time, gravity is going t pull any gas/etc in the carbs to the left side of the bike. What you saw on the right (3&4) might have just been a dried up version of what is on the left. I'll also second checking for rust.

              You want the carbs at least as clean as these:

                    You've got the extra $1.50 if you can confirm that all that brown powdery stuff is in fact extra power fuel additive and not the dregs from a bottle of Old Peculiar!

                      Wow, my bike sat for 8 to 10 years at the bottom of the garden, but the carbs were a lot cleaner than that. Thanks for the replies.
