I assume you are talking about the ignition SWITCH, not the ignition proper which is the system which provides spark to the engine.
Not sure what to suggest other than spraying some lube into the switch and jiggling the key around. Not sure it would matter but make sure the steering lock is not binding due to too much weight on the lock itself.
Good luck.Ed

i had to pry the steering lock button back in so that the ignition switch would be in the start position or on whatever it is

Did you try having someone sit on the bike and remove any weight from the front and wiggle the front and at the same time have your partner try to get the ignition out of "park" while pushing in on the ignition switch?. If you already pryed it and ruined it I don't know what to tell you. :?1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
