    stock exhaust question

has anyone taken the inside of the mufflers out? how did it sound? how did it perform? did you have to re-jet? do they come out easy? how? thanks

Stock mufflers baffles are generally riveted in, or maybe spotwelded in..either way you'll prolly have to cut them out. You may be able to cut the meg off at the end of the header pipe and find a slip on that will work. Gutted megs IMO sound like crap, much like a car with the exaust rotting out. ...as far as rejetting, general consensus is yes most will tell you to rejet due to the change in backpressure, but there are others who say that you dont, but will need to adjust the carb's mix settings. Most aftermarket companies such as Vance and Hines contend that in most applications a rejet is not neccessary, but they have tuned the system to work with the stock settings of the bike they are intended for. I dunno for sure but i think the 850 has a crossover pipe in the stock system that may prove to be a pain if you dont rejet. Dunno for sure, as i'd never keep a stock header if i wanted to change the set up.

Find a good used 4 into 1 and get a cannister than you might not have to rejet, just resync and reset the fuel screws. for highest idle.

Sounds like total Ass. sell your stock pipes if any good and buy V&H, Jardine, Kerker, or MAC

Yep, they sound like garbage. A true open megaphone sounds awesome, but a gutted stock can (which is really a tapered core muffler, not a meg) sounds nothing like that.

If I recall correctly, the '79s and maybe the '80s did not have the crossover pipe. That appeared late in '80 or on the '91 models.

What kind of shape are the stock pipes in?
