    fork damper oil lock problem

    1985 GS 550 ES

I decided to rebuild the fork on my parts bike and swap it into my bike when it's all done. I got it all apart except for the damper oil lock. Part 18 in the diagram:

Also didn't find any wavy or flat washers above it--but when I rinse the fork tubes with kerosene they might come out if they are just hiding somewhere.

I tried tapping out the oil lock with a socket from below but I didn't go too crazy--I don't know how it's supposed to come out. The Clymer and Haynes manuals suggest it will fall out as easily as the damper rod. What gives?

This is an anti-dive "posidamping" fork where the anti-dive is *not* connected to the brakes.

      Local dealer's site: http://www.sportlandmotorsports.com/fiche_select.asp
Then copied the image link. Many dealers have this system on their web sites.

Now what's going on with that oil lock?! It's freezing here--I didn't think to try a hair dryer on it, although I bet my wife wouldn't like fork oil on it ("I love the smell of aged 15W in your hair.")

#18 will usually either come out stuck to the damper rod or will drop out after easily, if thats the right fiche i'd suggest someone has messed with the forks before & either put tham together without the washers or with the washers under the oil lock (seen that before)

heres another site with exploded drawings etc :-D you might want too look your bike up there http://www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_parts.htm

I got it finally with a screwdriver and a mallet and not much force. I think I was confused as to whether it was the spacer-looking thing in the lower tube or the little piece inside the bottom of the upper tube/stanchion that rotates and isn't on any diagram. Anyways, all sorted out now. (And, yes, I am missing half of those washers and only one was in the right place.)
