Exhaust mountin bolts

I'm looking for info on the size bolts that are used to mount the exhaust at the flange on a 1981 gs650L. If anyone would happen to know the length, diameter, and thread it would be appreciated.

Here's a quick lesson in Suzuki bolt shopping in general:

First, find a site with microfiches that use actual real live Suzuki part numbers. Here are a few:

Next, dig through the fiches to find the part you're interested in. In this case, it was on the "MUFFLER" fiche.

Here's the part number for that particular bolt: 01500-0840A

Now, if you're lucky, the thread diameter and length are right there in the part number:

Thread diameter: 8mm
01500-0840A

Thread length: 40mm
Thread diameter: 8mm
01500-0840A

The standard thread pitch for 8mm threads is 1.25mm.

Bolts are specified by the length and diameter (and pitch) of the threads -- this does not include the head of the bolt, and has nothing to do with wrench size. Most people replace these with 8mmX40mm stainless steel allen head bolts and lock washers. Make sure you cover the threads with a nice thick coat of good antisieze compound before installing.

Deciphering part numbers doesn't always work -- there are some oddball or fine thread fasteners here and there -- but it's often quite useful.

Here's my favorite source for stainless steel goodies and materials in general -- they have no minimum order, they ship fast and cheap, and prices are very reasonable if you don't mind that most bolts come in packs of 25, 50, or 100. I like having extras, personally.

On both, look for "socket head cap screws", what we civilians call "allen head bolts".

as I recall the parts codes could also be used for revealing loads of other info. However, I can't remember how they worked. Have you got any other snippets on part codes?
