Torque specs for cams?
I haven't gotten my manual yet (in the mail). Could somebody please tell me the torque specs for the head bolts and the cam hold downs? It's for a 1983 GS750T 4 valve. I just replaced the head gasket. Help?
Thanks.2010 Honda VFR1200F

if im not mistaken, they're all in inch/pounds...which unless you have a inch pound torque wrench, does you no good. Tighten them till they stop, then another half turn.

Yup...use your built in torque wrench...lol. I have removed both a couple times now, and never had a leak issue. Just do your best to get them tightened evenly.

I dont think thats right man. Someone ran into this same problem, and over torqued his valve cover and mangled it. I think that should actually read in inch pounds. thats alot of force..29 ftlbs

You're talking about cylinder head bolts right? On my '79 850 they are 26 foot pounds, and later models had a torque spec. quite a bit higher than that. Make sure you get the right spec. and also make sure you torque them down in the proper order.
Also the cam "hold downs" (different from the cam cover) need to be torqued very accurately and carefully. The spec. for my bike was 6 foot pounds, but again, yours might be different. Watch that you torque them down evenly, drawing the cams into position keeping everything as level as possible.
Also keep in mind that each cam hold down usually has a letter that corresponds to the same letter on the head to insure correct placement. Also special bolts are used to hold these down.......make sure you use them.
Make sure you know your proper cam timing procedure, etc., or you could be in big trouble.
Having written this: You might want to make sure you have your manual on hand BEFORE you begin this job!Last edited by Guest; 12-28-2007, 01:43 AM.

Unfortunately too late for that
1 broken cam bolt for the hold down... Yes its in the head and no, not from over torquing but from a weak bolt. Sighs.. To be continued Saturday.2010 Honda VFR1200F

Thank you bud. I am just so tired at this point.
Installed a new stator, used Katana coils, head gasket and battery today.
Okay so that was all the good...
Then I watched my friend destroy the tachometer (yes he broke the glass) and then he broke the head off the screw into the head. I can't believe this... Gonna clear my head for a day or two. This resurrection is starting to taking to take a toll on my heart.2010 Honda VFR1200F
