shaft drive jammed??
i just got a 82 gs1100gl parts bike and i last night i was working on it and i was able to get it into every gear with out using the clutch, just had to move the tire(on center stand) a bit while using the shifter. anyways, i left the bike outside over night and i went to roll back in the garage tonight and it wont budge. when i pulled the clutch in, the bike still wouldnt move. so does that mean the shaft drive is possibly jammed? all i can remember from last night, is i had it in neutrul and rolled it out back. i dont think its even in gear, like i cant pry the wheel to move at all to make the engine turn over. so i would think the problem is somewhere in shaft drive right? theres no starter, and i remember i was able to put my finger in the hole and turn the gear one way, now it wont move; if that helps too. any ideas? thanks.Tags: None

I have absolutly never heard of a driveshaft jamming. And I've owned 5 suzuki shafties. Recheck the clutch and try shifting.

well theres no cable, i just had some vice grips tonight that i was using to turn the knob thing. i mean if the clutch is in, then the bike should move no matter what gear. but it wont. so that means its in the transmission or the shaft drive. when i move the rear wheel a little bit, the shock of what could be stopping it doesnt make its way all the way to the engine case, it just seem likes it binding or locking in the pumpkin thing. i have the rear caliper off too, so that rules out that. unless the shaft at the tranny end is locked and the shock im feeling is just the backlash of the two gears hitting in the pumpkin. i mean i did absolutly nothing between the time i rolled it out and tonight when i tried to bring it back in, and it was jammed up. like i cant even pry the wheel to see if the engine would turn over on the other end. it just wont budge.

A cold clutch won't slip easily without the engine running. Doing it by hand on an 1100 -- nigh impossible. You didn't turn the wheel backwards in gear, did you?

However, it doesn't sound like this is your problem, but who knows. My guess is there's something going on with the clutch and/or transmission, since it sounds like that's what you worked on.

uh oh haha, i did turn the wheel backwards in gear. i was fooling around when i first got it and while it was on the center stand in 5th gear i was pushing the tire backwards to turn the engine over so i could check the valve clearances. but even after that, i was able to go back to neutral and roll the bike out. what happens if you turn it backwards in gear anyway?

The final output shaft has a mechanism which adds play to the driveline, similar to slack in a chain. If you roll the wheel in revers, especially in 5th, you may hang up the mechanism, or at least cause the engine-transmission to be at odds with the final drive.
best not to roll it in reverse in gear. You can use a socket on the crank at the right side of the engine to turn it over for valve checks. It's more accurate and easier.1981 GS650G , all the bike you need

Maybe check that one of the 4 bolts that tie the universal joint on the end of the drive shaft to the transmission, have not come loose and is fouling something.
You should be able to access it by removing the rubber boot on the end of the swing arm.

problem solved, kind of. turns out something must of froze when i left it out two nights ago. i put it in the heated garage last night and i just went out and the wheel turns fine. maybe the cold weather caused the metal to contract and bind something up.
