gs850 turn signals
Question from new member. I have an 83 gs850 with only 6600 miles on it. Was crusing last fall and it just flat quit. Found a short in the main (red) wire. Ran a new wire up to head lite and back to fuse box and she started right up but now my turn signals don't work. Any ideas??Tags: None

hey howdy hey!
Mr. zukilump,
Let it be known that on this day you are cordially and formally welcomed to the GSR Forum as a Junior Member in good standing with all the rights and privileges thereof. Further let it be known that good standing can be improved with pictures (not you, your bike)! :-D
Oh boy. Troubleshooting electrics can be tedious. If you don't have one, download a manual from my little BikeCliff website. I'll try to remember to email you a full-color wiring diagram, as soon as I find it, if someone else doesn't beat me to it. I think I have one on my home computer (I'm at work right now).
On these classic bikes (I won't say "old") there can be grounding issues and oxidized connection issues. Cleaning all the wiring (connections and grounds) is pretty much mandatory. Check all your fuses too. Make sure the fuse connections are clean. The blinker unit itself should be checked too. When you re-wired the headlight, could you have bypassed the blinkers so that they are no longer getting power? Double-check all those connections in the headlight bucket.
Thank you for your indulgence,

I find that the wiring inside the headlight shell is somewhat tight and that working in there could loosen other connections. Ted

Thank you fellas. Will check all connections again. Will advise. Will post some pictures when I figure out how to do that.

Wiring diagram GS850G
Mr. zukilump,
Click here to download a 2.4MB black and white diagram.
Click here to download a 242KB color diagram.
(Actually, you might have to right-click and "Save as...")
Hope they help.
Thank you for your indulgence,

Hi Mr Basscliff,
I see the two diagrams you have differ from another. The colour one has a 5 fuse system and the black & white one has a 4 fuse system. The colour copy also shows the factory mod to the 3rd generator phase while the B&W one still shows the light switch for that phase.
Interesting!

EDIT: The color wiring diagrams, and other technical info, can be found at the Smoke Riders Association website. Look in the Tech section.

Yes, I thought the one with the 3rd phase via the switch must be an older model.
I just got stuck with a leaking fuel filter today and found that it had Taiwna written on it, it seems like Taiwan spelled incorrectly. Maybe copied by the Taiwanese from the Japanese and then copied by the Chinese from the Taiwanese copy! I would think this one is really a non-non OEM part.

Found the problem fellas. Started following the wires off the diagram and found a disconnection in the bunch of connectors under the plastic wrench kit holder. Plugged it in and everything started blinking. Thank you all for the input and help.\\/

Zukilump,
So now you got everything in order.
Now look in the meetingplace section of this forum and find the Brown County rally for this May in south central Indiania, maybe that is not too far from where you are in IL.http://webpages.charter.net/ddvrnr/GS850_1100_Emblems.jpg
Had 850G for 14 years. Now have GK since 2005.

Redman, well everything was fine till yesterday. Got everything put back together and then spotted oil dripping from the right fork tube. Yup, seal! Just pulled the forks out to take over to shop in morning for new ones. Will take a look at the Brown Co. meet in May, thanks for heads up. Heading down to Waterloo, SC for month of Feb and pulling my 850 along hoping for some riding weather to get a jump on the season.
