    Valve adjustment on the fence.

Ok this is my first solo job checking these..so i need a lil reminder/refresher help.

This motor 8v GS750 motor. spec is .03mm to .08

Exhaust side, gauge goes smooth in till .06mm then its tight on all cylinders

Intake side, 04 is a lil tight on all of em...03 would probably slide in (my feelers only go to 04) You think im ok on my intake side or should i replace them all now?

It won't hurt to change them out to the next shim size. I would. Either that or get the right feeler guages and make absolutely sure that they are within spec.

I also could swap sides with the shims provided the intake ones would still keep the exhaust side in spec right?

Ive heard say that the intake will tighten faster than exhaust anyway...So i like you shall await an answer... Yeah I SHOULD just replace them all now, while i have the SOB open and it isnt going anywhere anytime soon, but im just curious.

Tck, try the next thinner shims on the intake side and measure your clearance again. If it is still in spec, go with thinner shim. If the clearance is too great, over 0.08mm, go with original. Per spec is good enough.

You are correct in thinking more clearance is beneficial since they wear tighter but this usually takes a few miles. Unless you are blessed with great luck, or have a large stash of shims, I usually have to compromise and go with some that are marginally out of spec, larger clearance always.

I'd leave the exhaust side alone. Go one down on the intake.

Is mine the only Suzuki dealership left that swaps shims for free?

Yes... mine charges 5 bucks for exchange. Z1 is cheapest.....

I would swap out the intakes too as .09 should be ok & if you have .03 you'll probably have to swap them in 2 or 3k anyway....

Your other option is to get them ground down on a flat table grinder... there is one guy here that does that. Perfect valve setting every time then.

I managed to find enough "X" shims to get all mine set to .06 last time...

By the way, are you using factory manual method rather than Lobe at 90 method? They give different results.

Yours is the last Suzuki dealership that has even heard of shims.

OH all the dealerships round here have heard of them

                          Usually goes
"12.99 each and we'll have to order them"

                          Then i call Z1

Yep, lobe flat to casing. Someone posted pics from the manual on my valve adjust thread. Do a search you can print them out. Think it was Nessism that posted them. Dan

One of the local dealerships will swap shims but all they have are 2.70 and up, about worthless. At a boneyard, I went with my micrometer and spent better than 20 minutes looking through a coffee can full of kawasaki and suzuki shims to find a 2.60 that I needed. Found one, needed two; used a 2.55x to get close. Paid $5 for the pair. Don't think will do again however.
