    didnt know that was the chain tension adjuster

    when i got my 82 gs1100L bout two months ago, i did usual of checking all the little things out about it. and i happen to be reading my manual and i came across this little knob that i found out was the cam chain tension adjuster. well when i was doing my go over of the bike, i remember playing around with it and turned it. i mean my bike runs good and all, but theres a slight top end noise, and i figured maybe it was because of that. is there a certain adjustment they are supposed to be at?

    Your cam chain adjustment is automatic and you shouldn't really twiddle with the tensioner once set. Have a look at the manual on here somewhere - it tells you the procedure to follow when setting up.

    The main thing I would do on a new GS motor is check the valve clearances.

        do i have to take the tensioner off in order to reset it?

          Yes, but if it is still installed there is no need unless you plan on removing it and cleaning it.
          1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

            oh ok, i just wanted to make sure i wasnt causing any damage. i didnt know that it would reset itself automatically. eventually ill take it off next time and clean it when i have the carbs off.
