More of the thinner shims could be purchased so they would be readily available. Of course, any other donations of cash or shims would be accepted, too.

Not sure, but I think he was going to have me take care of the process, so I will have to let everyone know when the exchange is up and running. 8-[.
That's very noble of you Steve.
Do you have a micrometer? I wouldn't want you to get caught in the middle if used shims might not match the stamped value. And what about the unmarked ones that we may have that could still be useful for someone else?
And yes I would send my extra 2.65 and 2.65x's off to someone in need.

Not quite a micrometer, but I do have digital calipers. All shims would be verified and the number would be clearly visible.

Not sure yet if I am to be the custodian of the 'stash', and have not yet worked out any logistics, so if anyone has any suggestions, I will gladly listen. 8-[

        To Steve and All...

I can think of nobody better suited to be the "'custodian'" of these shims!
This is something discussed with Steve that I feel is the least I can do for the board for all the info and help with this silly 850 I purchased. Steve has shared much time and effort towards getting this hunk running.
We have a ways to go but hopefully it will be running like new very soon.

Steve, I will be contacting you shortly upon ordering required gaskets and other goodies. To the board, consider this shim kit yours (as soon as we're done with it!).

Any thoughts on this? Is it something we're gonna do?
Of course, Steve you'll be appointed the "Master Keeper of the Shims"!
...or would this put the shim merchants out of business?

              I need 2.60, 2.65, 2.70,2.75

I probably need 2 of each. I have a couple 2.85s and 2.80s if anybody has need of them. And once I sort out what I need, I'll return the unused ones. Thanks.

I have two 2.65x shims (very rare and worth hundreds of dollars...just kidding) that I could send you for no charge. Seems like you've had a lot of headaches so far. In case you didn't know- 2.65x means somewhere between 2.65-2.70.
But not sure why you would need 2 of each as the idea is to shuffle some of your existing shims and I'd find it hard to believe you would be dropping more than 1 or 2 sizes. All total you should have 8 shims and be able to use at least a few of the old ones in different valve locations.

NOTE: I would hang on to 1 or 2 extra shims so the next time you can do the shim shuffle without turning the cams with an empty bucket!! This is how I did it.
PM me with your address if you want the shims. I would not want them back and pass on the favor to someone else.

I think that my valves were never adjusted

Lurch, all my shims were between 2.85 and 2.60, and since my feeler gauges only go down to .04mm, and ALL of the valves were tighter than that, I'm not really sure what I need until I can actually get a measurement on some of them. I like the shim-over-tappet arrangement, but not having a supply of shims really slows this process down.

Easiest thing to do is to send me an e-mail, I will send you a copy of my valve adjust spreadsheet. It will help you keep track of your shim sizes from one service to the next. The first one is the hardest because you will have to look at all the shims and enter their sizes into the chart, but then it's rather easy to see what you can swap around.

For this service, take one of your shims that is smaller than the 2.85 (If that is one that needs to be changed) and measure it. If you get a good reading, you know that shim is correct. Keep substituting smaller shims and you will soon find what you can swap around to minimize buying new shims.

Would a 2.65x be too small?
