Over heated brake pads okay to reuse?

Recently acquired 850 had no rear brakes so pulled apart the master and found the piston stuck. Broke down the caliper for good measure and found evidence of serious overheating; pads stink to high heaven and have a scorched color to them. I think the brake must have been dragging so the PO cracked a line to bleed off the fluid.

My question is whether or not the pads are still safe to use? They have plenty of material left but clearly have lead a difficult life.

    Thanks in advance.

Well, you can sand off the glaze and reuse, but why bother? A new set of pads, fresh fluid, a new seal and may be a brake line and you're done.

I always prefer to err on the side of caution on brakes

They might be OK in the same way a patched tire might be OK, but why risk your safety over a set of abused pads? Rear brake pads for your bike are only $15 or so. http://search.ebay.com/gs850-brake-p...dsreturnedZ300
