    School me on Coils

I've noticed my plug boots look a little cracked here and there. So far all four pipes get hot and everything sparks. However I know it's time to replace them.

Can someone please explain to me the importance of plug caps, coils etc and how they relate. Also, what is Dyna? Sometimes I see old gs's with the yellow coils. Is that Dyna? I've searched DYNA as have seen more posts on aftermarket ignitions. I just need coils, I think.

    thanks ya'll

    OK, Class...

As you might already know, ignition systems deliver high voltage, measured in thousands of volts. Any electricity, especially high voltage, will try to follow the easiest path to ground. A crack in the insulation allows water to get closer to the conductor and this is exactly what the high voltage is looking for. If you get your wires wet, you will think that you grabbed your moped instead of your GS. "Getting your wires wet" could mean washing the bike, trying to get home in a rain shower or even trying to take off in a light fog.

What is Dyna? It's actually Dynatek and they offer ignition kits and other electronics for motorcycles. They are a popular upgrade to get rid of your points and go to electronic ignition.

Yellow coils? A quick look at Dyna coils shows that they are available in gray, brown, green, black and blue. The colors are not just to match your bike, they have different operating properties. The only yellow coils I know of are Accel coils and I happen to have some on my wife's 850.

Since you already have electronic ignition in your '81, you can get by with just a new set of coils. You are looking for a 3 ohm primary resistance and dual output. If you go with Dyna, the DC1-1 is a green coil that would work. Price is $155 and I don't think wires are included. If you go with Accel, the Universal Inductive Kit is the one you want. No idea on price, but wires are included.

Upgrading your coils is good, but maybe, at least for now, all you need is new boots. I got some from NGK and they made a big difference.

Yes, the yellow coils are Accel Supercoils. The PO put them on my bike. They are still on it. He also put on the big yellow Accel wires which I have replaced with red 7mm Dyna wires from Z1. I kept the big yellow wires in case I want to go back to them. Only reason I replaced the wires is I thought I had a coil or wire problem but it turned out to be something else.

My coils work fine, so I just replaced the wires and boots.

Same thing here with my wife's bike. Came with yellow wires, but I did not need them screaming out for attention, so I replaced them with generic black wires from Auto Zone.

Well, at least it's a good place to start. Then you'll find out if you'll need to do more. If you end up replacing the coils then you'd do the boots as well anyway, so you won't be out anything.

I also have the same issue and would like to replace the wires and boots. I have seen other posts about pulling the OEM wires out of the coils and replacing them by pushing in the new wires and boots. Is this the best way to do it or can you splice the existing wires by the coils? Some of these posts mentioned that the old wires can break within the old coils and need to be dug out. My coils are OK but I do not want to damage them or not install the new wires correctly.

I bought 4 brand new spark plug caps for 16 dollars from the dealer. Nice NGK caps. Now it does not sputter in the wet.
