    Where to start

My latest acquisition is a '83GS1100E where someone had taken off the front headlight assembly but at the same time cut a bunch of the existing wires and even removed some. This was all in an attempt to install a special fairing.

The dash lights up but not very bright and nothing happens if I hit the starter so they must have snipped some of those wires. I'm wondering if it might be easier to look for a complete used wire harness assembly and replace what's in place now rather than splice things back together.

I need to start somewhere on getting this mess back in order so any ideas/comments would be appreciated.

    Are wiring harnesses available anymore?

Try Ebay. Good night and good luck.

Ebay, or breakers for wire harness. You could also check a decent repair manual, most have a wire diagram if you can interpret them. If you can give specific wire colors, someone here can either look up or exam their bike to give answers. There have been a few posts on rewiring bikes to eliminate some of the less important stock items. Try a search if interested.

Actually, there is a chance that your starter still works. Did you pull the clutch in at the same time?

In stock configuration, the clutch is a safety switch so you don't accidentaly roll the bike by hitting the starter.
