which piston rings...

I have an 82' 850GS. I need a new piston ring set for all 4 pistons. But every fiche I look at there is 2 different possible numbers with maybe a $5 difference and am not sure which one to choose. At flat-out on the crankshaft there are 2 numbers:
25-1 RING SET, PISTO 12140-45121 (replaces 12140-45120) $21.40

25-3 PISTON RING SET (STD) 12140-49001 $25.80

Which one do I go with. Thanks again for the help guys.

i think you'll find some are oversize rings, just not that clearly indicated

why do you need them anyway, at 21k???

I had to do the top end because of the valve, head and base gaskets and when I got to the pistons they had a tiny bit of scorching towards the top around the edge. Not a lot, but just a tiny bit and the pistons are fine with no nics or anything. The rings looked worn so thats why i am replacing them

what is the difference between your part # and the other one that they list??

i had the same questions as you before my rebuild
the other numbers stand for "OverSized" rings but the parts fiche has (lots of) typing errors
should read:
OS1 - 0.5mm
OS2 - 1.0mm

but you may want to check with the place you'd be ordering from before purchase, just to make sure my memory's acurate 8-[

if you're not yet past this point (from your sig) "Prying the glued gaskets off of my covers." - there's a spray can with liquid that pretty much disolves any old gasket and makes it really easy to remove

lol. I already used a whole can and waited 10-15min between removing gaskets with a razor blade. I couldn't believe how much time it took me to remove the gaskets. I am just waiting for the rings and a spring valve compressor tool that my friend(mechanic) is getting to do the valves/seals. Thanks anyways though.

The part number you want is 12140-45121, the cheaper set.

The others are an oversize, 1mm I think. You won't need those for a couple hundred thousand miles.

The fiches are shot through with errors, so you definitely want to verify things that look shady like this.

For example, if you're ordering new cylinder studs, one of the part numbers on the 1980+ GS850 fiches is incorrect. The 1979 fiche has the correct numbers. (You don't need new studs, though.)
