    GS850G 1981 Stock Exhaust Rattle

I'm down to the last details on my bike !! YEA.
I have a rattle in the left side pipe. I seems to be at the end of the header pipe. I know that there is a pipe in a pipe and I think the inside pipe is touching the outside pipe.
Do you guys know what is inside the stock exhaust and where everything is located?
I am going to save this stock setup... but before exploratory surgery I thought I would ask.

Yep its likely to be the inner pipe rattling against the outer one, i had this happen a few years ago & it drove me nuts for months

As the bike was a bit of a rat & i wasnt too concerned about looks i drilled a small hole in the outer pipe & forced in a self tapping screw which sorted it

on a cleaner bike i'd try to drill a hole somewhere you cant see & then puddle weld through to the inner pipe, linish back & re chrome if needed

    hope it helps :-D

      Shot in the dark

      Mr. SteveR,

Have you tried tightening the clamps on the "pre-muffler"? Maybe the clamps or the connectors need to be replaced? Or is the rattle more toward the end of the pipe?

      Thank you for your indulgence,

      BassCliff

Be sure you've checked those pesty little heat shields, I seen a screw or 2 be loose & I've seen the little spot weld that holds the bracket to the shield come loose. Either will cause a vibration type rattle.

          Fixed Exhaust Rattle

          Yea !!!
I drilled a small hole in the exhaust header and then into the inside pipe. Then installed a ss screw. No more RaTtLe...
          This is a $15,000 to $20,000 screw.
These are the things that cause new bike fever.

I'm suffering from the same symptoms on my right hand header. I might do the screw trick mentioned in this thread, but it wasn't indicated how far back the inner pipe goes. How is the inner pipe kept separated from the outer pipe when it leaves the factory?

              Exhaust rattle fix update

Well, my screw in the exhaust pipe stopped the rattle... until it fell out !

I think a better fix would be to pull the inner pipe to the outer pipe and drill another hole the size of a stainless cherry rivet maybe 3/16 inch. Then while holding the pipes together with a wire hook, install the rivet. Then another rivet in the other hole.
I drilled the hole in the pipe just past the bend and near the inside... so it would not be so visible.

I haven't had a chance to address this on my bike yet, but I'm getting close as it's getting worse. I'm just trying to wrap my head around this before going forward. Is this more like a 'double walled' pipe? I keep picturing the inner pipe like its somehow floating, but I suspect maybe the space between the two pips is minimal?

                  Double Walled exhaust

My 81 gs850g stock pipes are double walled and I would guess the gap between the two is about 3/16" maybe less.

I just popped in two 1/8" stainless rivets. So far so good. One right after the bend, the other before the muffler. I drilled from the other side of the bike so you cant see them.
