Make a valve adjustment/tappet tool????
I'm in the process of doing a valve adjustment (found 5 tight, one with .001" clearance, and 2 ok) ANYWAY, just wondering if someone could give me the specs for making the tappet depressing tool. I know I can buy one cheep and I will do so if this doesn't work, but a buddy has access to a plasma table and if he can punch one out for me, it'd be free. All I need is the width of the tool, and a general profile description. If anyone could help me out, Id appreciate it. I searched for this info but couldn't find it. I also might just try the zip tie method.Tags: None

haynes manual has a picture i think but no specs
i've used two different tools and they diferred from each other slightly
as you obviously know the general shape of the tool i think you can figure out the specs for the half-round ("c") bit by measuring the cam journal diameter and the distance from the journal to the valve bucket edge (when in upper position as well as wjen depressed)
other than that, a lever of 4 inch should do as should 4-5mm steel plate as a materialGS850GT

I have a copy of the illustration that you require, but it is in an Acrobat format and I dont know how to attach it to the forum. If anyone can tell me then I will do my best. This illustration has all the measurements, angles, depths, radii, etc.

one of the icons is a "paper clip" (attach file)
new window opens
choose the option : "upload file from your computer" (click on "browse")
wait for the upload
close the window
proceed as usual with your thread replyGS850GT

OK. Thanks PSYGUY. Will give it a go and thanks for the tip on the greased cylinder base gasket. I always do that on the tappet cover gasket, but wanted to make sure the cylinder base gasket didnt leak because it is a pig to pull it all apart again and yes it probably will take a while to get the cylinders and head on as I haven't done it before. (Sorry am I hijacking this thread a bit).
Cheers Don

Sorry guys I tried to upload the file but it was too big. It was 30.4kb and the allowance is only 19.5kb. Better luck next time.

Another method that I have used to show pictures from a large pdf file is to show the picture on the screen.
Use the PRINT SCREEN button to save a picture to the clipboard.
Open Paint, paste that picture, crop it to get rid of all the extra screen stuff, save it as a jpg.
Upload that picture to Photobucket and link to it on the forum.
Also keep in mind that after you "punch one out" on the plasma table, you will still have to do some carving on the outside edge of the tool. It is narrower on the outside than it is on the inside to allow the shim to be removed from the bucket. What I would like is a tool that is even wider at the top so that the tool does not slip sideways so easily.

Thanks guys, someone emailed me a diagram of the tool (THANKS!). And ya, I know about the width issue. I dont really know why I insist on making a 15$ tool that might not work, but oh well. Ill let you guys know how it goes.
