    Dual throat carbs

Other than the 83-86 550 were there any other GS's that have the dual throat carbs?

    Nope. That was it.

No GS's, but the Kawa KZ1300 had 3 carbs for 6 cyl

        what went wrong?

Clearly the concept did not work out - just for historical interest's sake, any thoughts on what went wrong and why?

I can't speak for the GS failure, but in the case of the KZ1300, they chose to use three dual-throat carbs to keep the rack a bit narrower. To that end, they succeeded. I had no problems with my legs banging into the carbs.

The KZ1300 came out in April, 1979 and lasted through the 1982 model year. In the US, the only way to get a Kawasaki 1300 for 1983 was to get it fully-dressed as the Voyager 1300. Besides the full fairing, saddlebags and trunk, it also now had digital fuel injection. The rest of the world was still able to get a Z1300, and it was injected, too. With virtually no other changes to the engine, it raised the power output from 120 to 130 hp. For the Voyager, they figured all the extra weight (980 pounds) needed some help, so it got different cams to add more torque at a lower engine speed, and that lowered peak power to 117 hp. The extra torque and the lower gear ratios only made it easier to get the front wheel back into the air when grabbing second gear. ............\\/
